Ken Griffey, Sr., to Serve as Honorary Chair of Prostate Cancer Race
The Urology Group Welcomes Reds Hall of Famer to 10th Annual Event on Oct. 15
CINCINNATI (Aug. 25, 2016) – In addition to being a member of the Cincinnati Reds Hall of Fame, Ken Griffey, Sr., is a prostate cancer survivor. To help raise awareness of the disease, he will serve as honorary chair of the 10th annual ZERO Prostate Cancer Race, hosted by The Urology Group on Saturday, Oct. 15.
He and his son, Ken Griffey, Jr., serve as national spokesmen for “Men Who Speak Up,” a campaign encouraging men with advanced prostate cancer to speak up about warning signs and break the silence around the disease.
In addition to attending the event and greeting fans, Griffey, Sr., will assist with the official start and reward the top two individual fundraisers with a meet-and-greet and a short game of “catch.”
Griffey, Sr., a three-time Major League Baseball All-Star who won two World Series titles as a member of Cincinnati’s legendary “Big Red Machine,” was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2006. The disease had previously taken the lives of four of his uncles.
“Given my family history with prostate cancer, my mother insisted I take my risk seriously and get regular prostate cancer exams,” said Griffey, Sr. “Still, despite how much our family talked about prostate cancer, when it came to my own diagnosis, I was struck by how hard it was for me to speak up and tell my family what was really going on.”
Since 2007, The Urology Group has hosted this annual 10K/5K run/walk, which winds through the streets of Norwood. The event includes a kids’ “Dash for Dad” race as well as family activities, music and food.
The race on Saturday, Oct. 15 starts at 9 a.m. at The Urology Group’s headquarters in Norwood. For registration and additional event information, visit the ZERO Prostate Cancer Race page at urologygroup.com.
