PAE: NEW NON-SURGICAL TREATMENT FOR ENLARGED PROSTATE

If you’re looking for a new, minimally invasive treatment for BPH (enlarged prostate), keep reading! The Urology Group now offers Prostate Artery Embolization (PAE), a non-surgical solution to shrinking the prostate by reducing blood flow to it.

Here’s how this outpatient procedure works:

  1. Your doctor inserts a tiny flexible tube via a catheter until it reaches the blood vessels that feed the prostate.
  2. Tiny microspheres (particles) are injected through the catheter. These particles block blood flow to your prostate.
  3. Since blood flow is blocked, excess prostate tissue shrinks, which then reduces the size of your prostate.

Expect no ED or bladder control side effects. No general anesthesia or overnight stay is required. Learn more about PAE to treat your enlarged prostate (BPH).

PAE is now available at our new IR Center of Greater Cincinnati in Norwood. Ask your doctor if PAE is right for you.

WHY YOUR KIDNEYS DESERVE RESPECT!

It’s National Kidney Month. Let’s give those two bean-shaped organs the respect they deserve. Not only do your kidneys remove waste from your body, but they also filter ½ cup of blood every minute – that’s about 50 gallons a day!

Your kidneys are busy, so it’s important to keep them healthy.

Kidney-Friendly Foods Your Body Craves

Everything you eat affects your kidneys. Some foods are friendlier to your kidneys than others by making it easy for them to do their job of regulating vitamins, nutrients, electrolytes, minerals, and the amount of water in your body.

Here are some foods your kidneys crave. Read more details here on why these foods are great.

  1. The veggie rainbow – broccoli, bell peppers, leafy greens, and carrots
  2. Sweet fruitions – almost all fruits (except maybe bananas) are good for the kidneys because they burst with fiber, vitamins, and (yes) antioxidants
  3. Plant proteins – beans, seeds, nuts, tofu, nuts, and flax
  4. Certain animal proteins – lean fuel such as skinless chicken, fish and shellfish, eggs, and low-fat yogurt
  5. Whole grains – provide benefits for treating and managing kidney disease and weight loss

Shattering Kidney Stones with More Accuracy

If you’re among the one in 10 people who will experience the pain of kidney stones in your lifetime, you’ll want to become familiar with lithotripsy. This procedure uses shock waves to break up stones that form in the kidney or the ureter.

We just installed the newest lithotripsy equipment in February – the MONDULITH® SLX-F2. It can deliver shock waves to kidney stones with exceptional accuracy. Using advanced imaging technologies, MONDULITH visualizes the location and size of your kidney stones in real-time. This enables your doctor to precisely locate the stones before delivering shock waves, which minimizes the impact on surrounding tissues and reduces the risk of complications.

And because MONDULITH can reach kidney stones that are more deeply embedded, we’re now able to treat more patients with this minimally invasive procedure than ever before.

Lithotripsy, along with the new CVAC system described in our December newsletter, means The Urology Group has some of the newest, most efficient means available today for the treatment of kidney stones.

PSMA PET/SCANNING NOW OFFERED AT THE UROLOGY GROUP

When it comes to diagnosing and treating any cancer, precision counts. The Urology Group is proud to announce our investment in a new PSMA (prostate-specific membrane antigen) PET/CT scan, which will be offered at our Norwood campus at the end of April.

This new PET/CT scan uses an FDA-approved radioactive tracing agent to pinpoint the location of the cancer cells with the body, allowing our care team to be much more precise in our treatment planning.

It is particularly useful for:

  • Detecting prostate cancer that has spread to other parts of the body (metastasis)
  • Monitoring the effectiveness of treatments for prostate cancer
  • Planning treatment for newly diagnosed or recurrent prostate cancer

If you’re discussing prostate cancer with your urologist, ask to see if a PSMA PET/CT scan is right for you.
