Prostate Artery Embolization (PAE)

This minimally invasive procedure improves lower urinary tract symptoms caused by BPH.

How It Works

The PAE procedure shrinks the prostate by reducing blood flow to it.

  1. Prior to your procedure a catheter will be placed into your bladder.
  2. Once sedated, the interventional radiologist makes a tiny incision in your inner thigh, then uses x-ray to guide a catheter into the blood vessels that feed the prostate.
  3. A liquid contrast is injected to make the prostate arteries visible.
  4. Tiny microspheres (particles) are injected through the catheter and into these blood vessels to reduce blood supply to the prostate, causing the prostate to shrink.
