Two Events – One Important Health Cause

October 27, 2016

Gender is one of the most consistent predictors of health and life expectancy. For men, this is not good news; on average, men die six years earlier than women.

From sexual health issues to prostate disease, men may encounter a host of conditions as they age that affect their day-to-day lives. As one of the largest urology groups in the country, we take great pride in delivering the most advanced medical and surgical care for treating urological and reproductive conditions, many of which affect men.

We also strive to be a good community partner by raising awareness of men’s health issues outside of the doctor’s office. We recently completed a successful event and will kick off another next week.

ZERO Prostate Cancer Run

On Saturday, Oct. 15, The Urology Group hosted the second-largest ZERO Prostate Cancer 10k/5k event in the country, with more than 1,200 participants convening at our Norwood campus. Our 10th annual run attracted a big crowd and lots of media attention, thanks in part to baseball legend and prostate cancer survivor Ken Griffey, Sr. who served as our honorary chair.

The prostate cancer Survivors’ Breakfast, hosted by Local 12 anchor Brad Johansen and sponsored by AbbVie, served as an inspirational highlight of the day.

This year’s race contributed more than $150,000 to ZERO – The End of Prostate Cancer, which funds research and provides educational and support materials. In addition to the runners, we thank our many sponsors, both local and national, for their assistance, as well as the community for supporting this important men’s health cause.

Movember

We also recognize Movember, the annual month-long event with the goal of “changing the face” of men’s health, particularly regarding prostate and testicular cancer.

To show our support and raise awareness of men’s health issues, some of our own physicians are joining men around the world in growing mustaches during the month of November. We encourage patients and the community to participate in one of the following ways:

  • Grow your mo. By growing facial hair, you can trigger conversations about men’s health.Â
  • For women (and men with hypogonadism), show your support by offering high praise to those braving an itchy face for charity. It’s OK to stop shaving legs, too!
  • Attend the Movember Kickoff and Shave-Off events. Join us for snacks, conversations about men’s health and a chance to win some great door prizes.
