It’s nearly Movember – when the razors get put away and the mustache combs come out of hiding.
We at The Urology Group are proud to recognize Movember, the annual month-long event with the goal of ‘changing the face’ of men’s health, particularly regarding prostate and testicular cancer.
Gender is one of the most consistent predictors of health and life expectancy. For men, this is not good news given that, on average, we die six years earlier than women. Among other health issues, the impact of prostate and testicular cancer is significant, with prostate cancer being the most common non-skin cancer in men worldwide and the number of cases expected to almost double to 1.7 million cases by 2030. About 1 man in 7 will be diagnosed with prostate cancer during his lifetime.
To show our support and raise awareness of men’s health issues, some of our own physicians are joining men around the world by growing mustaches during the month of November.
Personally, I’m excited to give the razor a break, and I invite all of you to join the effort to raise awareness with my fellow physicians by participating in one of the following ways:
- Grow your Mo. By growing facial hair we raise funds and awareness for men’s health, specifically prostate cancer. On Movember 1, start with a clean-shaven face and then let it grow. Feel free to groom, trim and style your way to facial hair supremacy.
- For the women, and those men with hypogonadism, show your support by offering high praise to those braving an itchy face for charity.
- Officially join our Movember team by signing up here and encouraging your friends and family to do the same.
- Attend the Movember Kick-Off and Shave-Off events. Join us for some BLUE beer, snacks and a chance to win some great door prizes.
