Board Certification

What is Board Certification?

Medical specialty certification in the United States is a voluntary process. While medical licensure sets the minimum competency requirements to diagnose and treat patients, it is not specialty specific. Board certification, however, demonstrates a physician’s exceptional expertise in a particular specialty and/or subspecialty of medical practice.

Board certification also signals a physician’s commitment to consistently achieving superior clinical outcomes in a responsive, patient-focused setting. Patients, physicians, healthcare providers, insurers and quality organizations look for board certification as the best measure of a physician’s knowledge, experience and skills to provide quality healthcare within a given specialty.

About the Certification Process

Certification by an American Board of Medical Specialists member board involves a rigorous process of testing and peer evaluation. The procedure is designed and administered by specialists in the specific area of medicine.

The American Board of Urology (ABU) was organized in 1935 to encourage study, improve standards and promote competency in urology practice.

Depending on the condition, services can be delivered at individual physician offices, at The Urology Center in our Norwood Campus, as well as each of the eighteen local hospitals. Our physicians' main emphasis is patient care but we also participate in Clinical Research related to urologic problems and enjoy a teaching relationship with the urology residents of the University of Cincinnati Medical School.

Our physicians are involved in a wide variety of community projects and pride themselves on the opportunities to lead those efforts.
